South Legion baseball takes BP title in style!

A male baseballs batter makes a dramatic play by hitting a ball. The stadium is blurred behind him. Only the lights of the stadium shine brightly, creating a halo effect around the bulbs.

South Anchorage baseball has pretty much been a strong program from the get-go…sometimes great, sometimes not so much, but pretty much always respected. After Sunday’s 4-0 whitewash of Minnesota stalwart Excelsior in the BP Tournament at Mulcahy, more kudos to the Wolverines.

Behind the pitching of tournament MVP Jimmy McGovern and some timely hitting, South is believed to be the first Alaska team to knock off three Outside opponents in the same tourney. Post 4 also defeated Lone Peak, Utah and Columbia, Tennessee in the tournament that went from Thursday through Sunday.

In addition to McGovern’s heroics on the mound, South also got a strong tournament from shortstop Lian Lincoln, who captured the Gold Glove Award.

Great weather was a hallmark of the first few days of the BP, and no doubt South didn’t mind the clouds Sunday as they captured the title.

One other thing…hats off to the tournament officials and committee who once again produced a top notch, first class baseball experience for the teams and fans.
