VETERAN IDITAROD MUSHER AILY ZIRKLE, INJURED ON THE TRAIL EARLIER IN THE DAY, HAS SCRATCHED FROM THE RACE AFTER ARRIVING IN THE CHECKPOINT OF ROHN AT ABOUT 8:00 LAST NIGHT. THE INJURY PROMPTED RACE MARSHALL MARK NORDMAN TO CALL THE ALASKA RESCUE COORDINATION CENTER FOR ASSISTANCE. ACCORDING TO A PRESS RELEASE TUESDAY FROM THE IDITAROD, ZIRKLE IS IN STABLE BUT GUARDED CONDITION AT PROVIDENCE MEDICAL CENTER IN ANCHORAGE. SHE REPORTEDLY HAS A CONCUSSION AND ORTHOPEDIC INJURIES TO HER UPPER BODY. ZIRKLE’S DOGS REMAIN IN ROHN AND ARE BEING TAKEN CARE OF BY VOLUNTEERS.

ACCORDING TO ZIRKLE’S KENNEL FACEBOOK PAGE, SHE WAS INJURED ON THE TRAIL SOMEWHERE BETWEEN RAINY PASS AND ROHN.

MEANTIME, VETERAN IDITAROD MUSHER CINDY GALLEA HAS SCRATCHED FROM THE RACE AT THE SKWENTNA CHECKPOINT BECAUSE OF NON-COVID ILLNESS.

 

ON THE ANCHORAGE HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL SCHEDULE TODAY, CHUGIAK IS PLAYING AT EAGLE RIVER, SERVICE GOES TO DIMOND, WEST TRAVELS TO EAST AND BARTLETT HOSTS SOUTH. GIRLS VARSITY AT 5:30 AND THE BOYS FOLLOW AT 7:30.
