High school football kicks off Friday in Alaska, heralding the end of summer and the beginning of pigskin weekends (pigskin??? Have you EVER seen a pigskin football? I’m old, but not THAT old…I’ve never seen one.) The Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network has released the first poll of the season, with a no-brainer at the top of Division 2/3 (smaller schools). Soldotna enters 2018 with a 59 game winning streak, and a program that from top to bottom, is first-class in every way. Head Coach Galen Brantley, a former Star who played for the legendary Bob Boudreaux, is quickly becoming a legend himself. Brantley, along with former Skyview quarterback Sarge Truesdell and others, has put in place an exemplary program that area kids get exposed to in grade school, then learn more about the game in junior high before landing on the So-Hi campus with a real understanding of what’s expected and what is possible. The consistency is amazing.
Soldotna opens the season with the same school they defeated to start last season. The Division 1 West High Eagles, another program that has enjoyed great stability and imagination under Head Coach Tim Davis, will visit Soldotna for a 6:00 clash Friday night. Should be a great game…expect both teams to be prepared and ready for the challenge.
