HS Hoops State Tournament starts Thursday; Men take to the Alyeska slopes for FIS GS

THE ASAA-FIRST NATIONAL STATE 3 AND 4-A BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS START TODAY IN THE VALLEY, WITH THE PANDEMIC TAKING ITS TOLL ON PARTICIPATION RIGHT FROM THE START.

THE JUNEAU SCHOOL BOARD SAID THE REGION CHAMPION JUNEAU-DOUGLAS BOYS WILL NOT BE MAKING THE TRIP DUE TO THE HIGH NUMBER OF COVID CASES AND LOW VACCINATION RATES IN THE VALLEY…AND THE VALDEZ BOYS AND GIRLS WERE SCHEDULED TO ATTEND…THEY WILL NOT. HUTCHISON WILL TAKE THEIR PLACE.

THE 3-A GIRLS WILL PLAY AT PALMER MIDDLE SCHOOL, THE 3-A BOYS AT COLONY HIGH, THE 4-A GIRLS WILL BE AT WASILLA HIGH SCHOOL, AND THE 4-A BOYS WILL SET UP SHOP AT PALMER HIGH.

GAMES WILL GO ON ALL DAY TODAY, CONSOLATION AND SEMIFINALS TOMORROW AND THE CONSOLATION FINALS AND CHAMPIUONSHIP GAMES WILL BE PLAYED SATURDAY.

 

ANCHORAGE NATIVE HUNTER EID HAD A HAPPY RETURN TO THE SLOPES OF ALYESKA YESTERDAY. EID FINISHED FIRST AND SECOND IN THE TWO GIANT SLALOM RACES IN THE WESTERN REGION F-I-S DOWNHILL TECH SERIES. EID, A 20 YEAR OLD WHO TRAINS IN IDAHO, GREW UP RACING FOR THE ALYESKA SKI CLUB. UAA’S MORO BAMBER TOOK FIRST IN THE SECOND RACE. TODAY, ITS SLALOM RACES AT ALYESKA.

 

THE ANCHORAGE ASSEMBLY TUESDAY APPROVED A RESOLUTION ASKING THE ACTING MAYOR TO CREATE A TRANSITION PLAN FOR THE EMERGENCY HOMELESS SHELTER AT THE SULLIVAN ARENA. THE NEW JUNIOR A-TIER 2 HOCKEY TEAM ANCHORAGE WOLVERINES ARE LOOKING TO PLAY AT THE SULLY NEXT SEASON. FEDERAL FUNDING FOR THE SHELTER RUNS OUT SEPTEMBER 30, AND THE ASSEMBLY WANTS A PLAN IN PLACE BEFORE THE NEXT MAYOR TAKES OFFICE. SOME ON THE ASSEMBLY CALLED THE RESOLUTION A “CONVERSATION STARTER”.
