Iron Dog rolls through Kotzebue; Skiers go downhill and cross-country

THE LEADING IRON DOG TEAMS ARE NOW IN KOTZEBUE FOLLOWING THE FIRST FULL DAY OF RACING OUT OF THE NOME LAYOVER TUESDAY.

SETTING THE PACE IS THE TEAM OF ROBBY SCHACHLE AND BRAD GEORGE. THEY ROLLED INTO TOWN AT 3:07 WEDNESDAY, JUST ABOUT ONE MINUTE OR SO AHEAD OF THE SECOND PLACE TEAM BRETT LAPHAM AND ZACH WEISZ. THIRD PLACE BELONGS TO THE TEAM OF BRYAN LESLIE AND CASEY BOYLAN.

OUT OF NOME, THE TRAIL TOOK THE RACERS TO KOYUK, THEN PAST BUCKLAND, SELAWIK, KIANA AND NOORVIK ON THE WAY TO KOTZEBUE. LAST NIGHT WAS A LAYOVER FOR ALL THE TEAMS, THEN TODAY THE REST OF THE SO-CALLED KOTZEBUE LOOP AND THE REMAINING 12 HUNDRED MILES TO THE FINISH IN BIG LAKE SATURDAY. LEAD TEAMS ARE EXPECTED THERE MIDDAY.

WEATHER REPORTS FROM THE TRAIL HAVE DESCRIBED BELOW ZERO TEMPERATURES IN THE KOTZEBUE AREA.

THREE TEAMS HAVE SCRATCHED SO FAR, INCLUDING DEFENDING CHAMPS TYLER AKLESTAD AND BRAD OISTAD.

 

 

ALYESKA CUP DOWNHILL RACES WRAPPED UP THIS WEEK, WITH OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES FROM FINNIGAN DONLEY AND RANDI VON WICHMAN LEADING THE WAY. DONLEY AND VON WICHMAN EACH EARNED 4 VICTORIES IN THE SLALOM AND GIANT SLALOM RACES. DONLEY WAS ESPECIALLY DOMINANT AS HIS TIMES IN THE U-16 RACES WERE FASTER THAN THE WINNING TIMES IN THE U-19 RACES.

 

APU NORDIC SKIER HUNTER WONDERS HAS EARNED A SPOT ON THE UNITED STATES TEAM THAT WILL COMPETE IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN GERMANY. WONDERS WAS A LATE ADDITION TO THE 17 MEMBER TEAM AFTER A STRONG PERFORMANCE IN THE U-23 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. WONDERS IS THE NINTH ALASKAN NAMED TO THE SQUAD THAT WILL COMPETE IN GERMANY AT THE END OF THIS MONTH.

 

THE HOMER MARINERS RETURN TO THE ICE WITH THE BIG TROPHY AND ARE READY TO DEFEND THEIR CHAMPIONSHIP AS THE DIVISION 2 STATE HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT GETS UNDERWAY TODAY AT THE MENARD MEMORIAL CENTER IN WASILLA. IT’S THE 25TH YEAR FOR THE SMALL SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT, BEING HELD AMID THE ONGOING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC.

ALONG WITH THE MARINERS, HOUSTON, MONROE, PALMER, SOLDOTNA, KENAI, NORTH POLE AND TRI-VALLEY ARE PARTICIPATING, WITH 4 GAMES RUNNING ALL-DAY TODAY, TWO GAMES TOMORROW AND A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AT 1:00 SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
