South/Bartlett captures girls HS hockey title; Petit wins Willow 300 for 4th time

IN THE CHILL OF THE GREAT OUTDOORS, SOUTH/BARTLETT CAPTURED THEIR THIRD STRAIGHT GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A 1-0 OVERTIME WIN AGAINST CHUGIAK/EAGLE RIVER SATURDAY.

THE GAME-WINNER CAME OFF THE STICK OF FRESHMAN HAYLEY ANZELINI. SHE KNOCKED IN A REBOUND OF AN AUDRA SCHILLING SHOT IN THE FINAL MINUTE OF OVERTIME. SOUTH/BARTLETT GOALTENDER BRIELLE AKAGI MADE 25 SAVES FOR HER THIRD SHUTOUT IN FOUR TOURNAMENT GAMES.

IN THE THIRD PLACE GAME, ZOIE CAMPBELL MADE 20 SAVES IN DIMOND/WEST’S 2-1 WIN OVER SERVICE/EAST.

THE WEEK-LONG TOURNAMENT WAS PLAYED AT THE BONNIE CUSACK OUTDOOR RINKS NEAR MULCAHY STADIUM, AND DESPITE FRIGID TEMPERATURES AND AT TIMES A BITING WIND ALL WEEK, THE GIRLS PLAYED GOOD HOCKEY IN FRONT OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

 

ONCE AGAIN, IT WAS NIC PETIT CROSSING THE FINISH LINE FIRST IN THE WILLOW 300 SLED DOG RACE. THE GIRDWOOD MUSHER TOURED THE COURSE AND FINISHED NUMBER ONE AT THE SHEEP CREEK LODGE JUST BEFORE 1PM SATURDAY AS THE RACE’S CHAMPION FOR THE FOURTH STRAIGHT TIME. TRAVIS BEALS OF SEWARD WAS SECOND, ABOUT 25 MINUTES BEHIND PETIT. LINWOOD FIEDLER OF WILLOW WAS THIRD.
