Sports come to a grinding halt due to coronavirus

THE CORONAVIRUS HAS TAKEN MOST ALL OF SPORTS OUT OF ACTION, INCLUDING THE UAA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM, WHO WERE SUPPOSED TO PLAY WESTERN WASHINGTON FRIDAY AT THE NCAA WEST REGION TOURNAMENT IN HAWAII. SO THE SEAWOLVES FINISH THE SEASON AS REGULAR AND TOURNAMENT GNAC CHAMPIONS, AND FASHIONED AN IMPRESSIVE 31-2 OVERALL RECORD DURING THE PAST CAMPAIGN.

HONORS FOR INDIVIDUALS CONTINUE TO COME IN, AS GUARDS SAFFIYAH YASIN AND YAZMEEN GOO WERE NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-REGION BY THE D2 CCA VOTERS. YASIN WAS THE MVP OF THE RECENT GNAC TOURNAMENT, AND RANKS FIFTH IN THE GNAC IN SCORING. GOO AVERAGED JUST OVER 10 POINTS PER GAME DURING THE PAST SEASON.

The UAA ski team ended the season on a high note, with four Seawolves earning All-American honors Thursday. UAA was the only team to have all three men place in the top-10 and earn All-American honors. Sigurd Roenning led the team with a fourth-place finish in the 10-kilometer freestyle race. Espen Person and JC Schoonmaker also achieved All-America status. Anna Darnell earned All-American honors with a 10th-place finish in the women’s five-kilometer race.

The NCAA has cancelled all NCAA Championships for the rest of the academic year due to health concerns around the covid-19 pandemic.

The Iditarod has decided to postpone both the Meet the Mushers event on March 21 and its Awards Banquet on March 22 in Nome. This decision was made in the best interest of public health. All other elements of the race are continuing as planned; however, they will be limited to essential race personnel.

The Iditarod will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed and encourages everyone to follow the guidelines and protocols put forth by public health officials.
