Stead, Seawolves begin Governor’s Cup Series in the ‘Banks, other weekend stuff too…

A fresh challenge in a season gone stale…UAA Hockey in Fairbanks to begin the four-game Governor’s Cup series. The excitement level will be high as these two long-time rivals lace’em up once again. Two games this weekend in The Golden Heart City, two in Anchorage March 1 and 2.

Alaska Anchorage leads the all-time series with Alaska Fairbanks 91-66-12 and leads the series in Fairbanks 42-40-5. The Seawolves are on a two-game winning streak against the Nanooks.
Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup
Alaska Fairbanks won the inaugural Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup in 1993-94 and has won the cup 14 times. Alaska Anchorage has raised the Cup 11 times with its win in 2008-09. UAF’s three Cups won in 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 were forfeited. UAA trails 35-38-7 in games against UAF in the Governor’s Cup.

AT THE ASAA-FIRST NATIONAL BANK DIVISION ONE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT AT THE MENARD IN WASILLA, THE DIMOND LYNX ADVANCED WITH A 3-2 WIN OVER WEST IN THURSDAY’S FIRST GAME. IN OTHER GAMES, SERVICE BEAT COLONY 6-1, SOUTH BLANKED PALMER 10-0, AND IN THE NIGHTCAP, LOGAN DUDINSKY’S HAT TRICK LED EAGLE RIVER PAST WASILLA 5-4. CONSOLATION AND SEMIFINAL GAMES ARE FRIDAY, THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IS AT 5:00 SATURDAY.

IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL, SEATTLE PACIFIC HELD OFF THE HOMESTANDING UAA MEN 65-64 THURSDAY NIGHT AT THE ALASKA AIRLINES CENTER. TYLER BRIMHALL LED THE SEAWOLVES EFFORT WITH 26 POINTS…BRENNAN RYMER ADDED 11. UAA WILL HOST 19TH RANKED ST. MARTIN’S SATURDAY NIGHT AT 7 AT THE ALASKA AIRLINES CENTER.

UAA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IS ON THE ROAD SATURDAY NIGHT, PLAYING AT MONTANA STATE-BILLINGS. THE 10TH RANKED SEAWOLVES ARE COMING OFF A 45 POINT VICTORY AT FAIRBANKS TUESDAY NIGHT.

 

AT THE DIMOND LADY LYNX PREP SHOOTOUT, THURSDAY’S WINNER’S GOLD BRACKET ADVANCERS WERE ACS, CHUGIAK, BARTLETT AND DIMOND. MOVING AHEAD IN THE MAROON CONSOLATION BRACKET WERE COLONY, SOUTH, KENAI AND LATHROP. THE TOURNAMENT CONTINUES FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY AT DIMOND HIGH SCHOOL, WITH THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SCHEDULED FOR 6:00 SATURDAY IN THE MAIN GYM.
