UA Board of Regents OK Extending UAA Hockey and Gymnastics Fundraising Deadlines

THE UA BOARD OF REGENTS VOTED IN FAVOR THURSDAY TO EXTEND THE DEADLINE FOR UAA’S HOCKEY AND GYMNASTICS PROGRAMS TO RAISE ENOUGH MONEY TO AVOID ELIMINATION.

BOTH PROGRAMS WERE ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK DUE TO ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT BUDGET CUTS.

THE GYMNASTICS TEAM HAS UNTIL JUNE 30 TO RAISE 440 THOUSAND DOLLARS TO GET REINSTATED NEXT SEASON. THEN THEY HAVE TO RAISE ANOTHER 440 THOUSAND DOLLARS BY JUNE 30 NEXT YEAR IN ORDER TO BE REINSTATED BEYOND NEXT SEASON AND BEYOND. UAA GYMNASTS AND SUPPORTERS HAVE MANAGED TO RAISE ABOUT 380 THOUSAND DOLLARS SO FAR.

MEANWHILE, THE HOCKEY TEAM HAS UNTIL AUGUST 30 TO RAISE 3 MILLION DOLLARS, ENOUGH TO FUND TWO SEASONS OF COMPETITION. HOCKEY SUPPORTERS HAVE RAISED ABOUT 1.8 MILLION DOLLARS SO FAR.

TITLE 9 COMPLIANCE IS ALSO PART OF THE TEAMS REINSTATEMENT, AS UAA HOCKEY NEEDS TO BE REINSTATED FOR UAA GYMNASTICS TO CONTINUE BEYOND NEXT SEASON.

THE UAA ALPINE SKI TEAM WAS ALSO FACING ELIMINATION, BUT SUPPORTERS OF THAT PROGRAM RAISED THE 680 THOUSAND DOLLARS REQUIRED BY THE REGENTS WELL BEFORE THE ORIGINAL DEADLINE.
